Pitching

WHY FREEZE

More and more, I hear/read/see the word FEEL in online influencers language. To understand and progress, athletes need to feel their way into improvement. I actually agree wholeheartedly. And I believe it helps to support something that I’ve used for almost 20 years of coaching pitchers…

VELOCITY INCREASES

In our last Daily Dose, we discussed the concept of Routines. And we tried to take the tangible out of the intangible with regard to goal setting. Today, I’d like to PROVE the importance of routines by sharing the case study of the 2019 Cypress Chargers. Fall ball just ended, and while I’m not in uniform this year… I was last year.

Swing, Swing, Stop

Well, this is one way to work towards a Swing, Swing, Stop approach. Today, let’s dive into what that means.

Pitcher Confidence

It might be disguised as a way to improve command, but I believe throwing batting practice is a way to grow comfortable. At Cypress College, Coach Scott Pickler doesn’t necessary dive deep into mental training. That said, much of what he does addresses mental toughness in an indirect way. ( Intentionally or not? I don’t know! )

Journaling

Engage the mind, build athletic accountability, and increase focus, presence, and mental toughness through this simple habit.

FRONT FOOT CLOSED, UP ON TOE

In our last Daily Dose, we discussed the keys of the Power Position. Moving around the body, there are four teaching points to the loaded, power, position

HITTER VS PITCHER COMPARISON

Truly, they are the same. The hitter and pitcher movement is the same. It’s about a baseball player using the body to make a ball move. It’s back to front, front to arms. Back leg, to front leg… front leg, to arms. It’s loading into the backside only to explode forward.

BACK TO FRONT, FRONT TO ARMS

From my understanding, this is the path described as “the kinetic chain.” This is how we build and produce a pulse of power… transfer it forward, only to capture/catapult/and add more power to that burst… and then transfer it into the hands.

Session #3: Pitching

We discuss and analyze the pitching motion and, more importantly, the plan to teach that motion to an athlete. We work hard to understand the kinetic chain, how best to physically train the body and arm, and teach off-speed pitches.
